The heart’s little brain protects against stress
New research is reshaping how we think about cardiac control. Beyond the brain's signals, the heart houses its own embedded neural network — the intrinsic cardiac nervous system — and a study published in Cell has begun to map how it keeps the heart beating steadily under extreme stress.
A team led by Rui Chang at Yale School of Medicine genetically labelled every cardiac neuron in mice and identified two genetically distinct subtypes. One population (Npy+ neurons) acts as a brake on a racing heart while remaining essential for keeping it beating. The second (Ddah1+ neurons) proved harder to read at first — until researchers noticed that mice lacking them frequently died when stressed. Removing these neurons left the heart vulnerable, while stimulating them improved survival.
The work challenges the long-held view that all cardiac neurons behave alike, and the authors suggest it could point toward better treatments for heart disease.
