Topological Identification of Vortical Flow Structures in the Left Ventricle of the Heart
Professor Takashi Sakajo from Kyoto University and Associate Professor Keiichi Itatani from the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Nagoya City University have developed a new theory to identify vortex blood flow within the heart. This theory combines topology (topological geometry) and mechanics, enabling the accurate identification of vortex blood flow patterns. The research team mathematically processed the flow of structures such as the moving myocardium during heartbeats to identify vortex blood flow within the heart. By using this theory, they decoded the patterns of vortex blood flow and discovered differences between a healthy heart and early-stage heart failure. This elucidation of the mechanism behind vortex flow within the heart allows for the classification of new cardiac functions. Furthermore, the improvement of medical practices for early detection of heart failure is expected through the use of this classification.
