 My Internship Experience

'Experience a Japanese professional work environment'
-Bridge your academic insight to job success-

  • Q: What initially attracted you to apply for this internship at our company?

I would like to become a cardiologist in the pediatrics field in my future career. When the program manager referred me to this company, I immediately got attracted to it because it focuses on cardiology. Also, I can not only learn the basic knowledge of the heart, but also different imaging softwares created by this company.

  • Q: How did this internship contribute to your professional development and career growth?

After joining this internship, I have tried a lot of different things and absorbed the knowledge like a sponge. I have learned a lot of professional vocabularies in cardiology, more cardio knowledge in depth, like energy loss, Wall Shear Stress, etc. All these are the build up for my future career as being a pediatric cardiologist. I realized I like learning about how the heart works and how they function properly. I am inspired and more determined to become a future doctor after this internship.

  • Q: What specific skills or knowledge did you gain during your internship?

Aside from learning cardiology knowledge, I also gain knowledge on marketing creation, like how to edit videos on Final Cut Pro and working on external content creation in a professional setting, and successfully help the company to upload a couple of videos on Youtube. Not just marketing field, I have learned how to do some simple programming in C# and work on Unity on one of the imaging software. I also learned skills in Blender and Paraview, which I can use to separate different sections of the heart in a more efficient way. As a bonus, I also learned how to put the specific type of window blinds for the company (Extra).

  • Q: How would you describe the company culture and work environment for interns?

The company welcomes everybody friendly and respectfully. The company is like a big family, and everyone is willing to answer my questions. I enjoyed working here everyday and talking to other coworkers. I can work comfortably in the office. Since there are always snacks and drinks provided, that we can enjoy whenever we feel tired from work. PS: We can cook our meal in the kitchen upstairs.

  • Q: What were some of the most challenging aspects of your internship, and how did you overcome them?

Since I had no experience in programming in C# and working on Unity, it was a challenge for me to work on the software by myself. However, my mentor and other colleagues are open to answer all the questions I have on how to improve the code and I have learned a lot of programming from them.

  • Q: In what ways did the internship meet or exceed your expectations?

I was expected to learn more medical field knowledge before coming into this internship. But, this internship definitely exceeded my expectations. Not only I learn more cardiology knowledge from creating videos in explaining simulation examples, I also have the experience in working on C# and Unity. I was able to debug some of the codings with the helps from my mentor.

  • Q: Can you share an example of a project or task you worked on that had a significant impact on the company?

I have helped make a user manual for one of the company’s imaging softwares, iTSurgery. I describe the functions of each icon in the softwares which can be used for reference in the future. Also, I tried to work on finding the difference between OS and Windows systems in the iTSurgery, since they have different function keys in these systems.

  • Q: What advice would you give to someone considering applying for this internship?

“Work hard and take the initiative, then you will be given a lot of opportunities!” Don’t worry if you have zero /just a little knowledge in heart functions or the software, the colleagues here are very knowledgeable and will help you familiarize them! Apply if you want to learn more about coding in the medical field!

  • Q: What surprised you the most about working here as an intern?

The working environment here really surprised me. I look forward to working here everyday because it is like a family here. Everyone is very friendly and caring. One of the interns had a severe allergic reaction to her bug bite, and our colleagues were worried about her and even offered her cream to relieve the symptoms.

  • Q: How did the internship impact your understanding of the industry or field?

Cardiology is not just biology-related, like the heart lies within the intersection of many organs, and to understand it requires the intersections of many different subjects such as math, computer science, etc. Through working on videos that explain company softwares, I was able to understand different concepts that apply to imaging tools to diagnose and find a more accurate treatment for the patients

  • Q: Did you have a chance to participate in company events or social activities as an intern?

I had a chance to participate in the Company’s barbeque event in my first month (only) as a new intern. The barbecue was so fun that I had more opportunities to talk with other colleagues and get to know them more from the event. It was a successful team bonding event with good food and drinks.

  • Q: What do you think sets this internship apart from others in the industry?

Since this is a startup company, we have more flexibility in doing a lot of projects and can change sectors once in a while. Our mentor respects our decision in working in different fields. So, I was able to work on different projects during my internship, which helped me learn a lot despite it being a short internship.
