 My Internship Experience

'Experience a Japanese professional work environment'
-Bridge your academic insight to job success-

  • Q: What initially attracted you to apply for this internship at our company?

As a bioengineering major, I wanted to look for experience in the biotech industry that would allow me to learn more about the current technology being created. I am still unsure about the specific path I want to take within my major, so I thought it would be interesting to learn more about the medical imaging software created from this company.

  • Q: How did this internship contribute to your professional development and career growth?

Being in a startup company allowed me to learn a wider variety of skills from the different tasks I completed. For example, I was able to gain skills in programming in C#, while also writing scripts to promote company softwares. I was also able to gain a better grasp of the biotechnology industry by seeing the workflow of my coworkers.

  • Q: What specific skills or knowledge did you gain during your internship?

I gained skills in many areas due to the many projects I worked on. For example, I learned how to program in C# since I worked a lot on developing company softwares. Previously, I had never programmed in C# before, but with the help of my mentor, I was able to quickly learn the basics. I also learned skills in working in Blender and Paraview, which I used to model sections of the heart.

  • Q:How would you describe the company culture and work environment for interns?

The company is very welcoming and friendly. I enjoyed coming in everyday to work on my projects and get to know my coworkers. Everyone was willing to answer my questions when I was confused working on my tasks.

  • Q: What were some of the most challenging aspects of your internship, and how did you overcome them?

Since I had never programmed in C# before, and had not programmed in Java in a while, it was at first a challenge to debug some of the issues present in the current code. However, being able to ask my mentor a lot of questions on how different parts of the code worked helped me gain a wider understanding of their application, and C# in general.

  • Q:In what ways did the internship meet or exceed your expectations?

Coming into the internship, I was expecting to learn a variety of different skills because startup companies usually allow for greater flexibility in changing tasks. This internship was able to exceed my expectations since I was able to work in all areas, including more STEM focused projects like developing company software, and marketing projects like creating videos to explain previous simulation examples.

  • Q:Can you share an example of a project or task you worked on that had a significant impact on the company?

I contributed to a medical file sorter program, which allows users to quickly and easily visualize DICOM and HDF files. I worked on various components, including debugging and refactoring code, introducing a method to ignore zip files when uploading folders, and creating a drag and drop function to upload files, among others.

  • Q: What advice would you give to someone considering applying for this internship?

Don’t worry if you do not fully understand heart functions or how the software works. I was able to learn a lot in my time here from my coworkers, since they’re all very knowledgeable in their fields. If you’re interested in anything from 3D modeling to software to marketing, you should consider applying!

  • Q: What surprised you the most about working here as an intern?

I was surprised at how friendly and relaxed the atmosphere was! Even as I was learning everything, I did not find working here to be stressful, and I enjoyed getting to know all my coworkers. Everyone brings snacks for us all to share.

  • Q: How did the internship impact your understanding of the industry or field?

It was very interesting to learn how Cardio Flow Design connects industry to the medical field. Through working on videos to explain company softwares, I was able to better understand the role this company, and the industry in general, have in improving public health. Writing different scripts meant for different audiences helped me understand what customers or doctors want to learn about the applications.

  • Q: Did you have a chance to participate in company events or social activities as an intern?

I participated in a company barbecue during my first month as an intern. It was a very fun activity, and it allowed me to get to know my fellow coworkers better while also eating yummy food.

  • Q:What do you think sets this internship apart from others in the industry?

Being able to work on so many different projects in a short span of time helped me develop many skills. Working with a smaller company meant that I wasn’t focused on working in one department the entire time. Also the building has a cool fire escape slide!
