Hi everyone! Saksham here, Today I would like to continue my series on Fluid Flow in Everyday Life. This series gives a brief look into how fluid dynamics shapes the things we see around us everyday. Today’s topic is Ships.
The most important parameter is the pressure due to compression of fluid around the ship’s hull, this is what pushes on to the hull affecting how much drag a ship has to overcome. Effective hull design aims to minimize changes in water velocity, ensuring smooth transitions. Since some velocity change is unavoidable, a secondary strategy is to orient the hull surface so pressure changes don’t push longitudinally. Longitudinal forces accumulate and increase ship resistance, so minimizing them is key to efficient design.
So this is a concise look into how ship hulls may be designed for optimization with the help of fluid dynamics.
